Suburb Guide
Sydney
Cosmopolitan, vibrant and multicultural, the City of Sydney is made up of a pastiche of precincts each with its own unique character. Situated at the very heart of Sydney is the Central Business District (CBD), the city's financial hub incorporating major financial institutions, five-star hotels, entertainment venues and a number of international designer stores such as Chanel.
The gateway to the city is vibrant Circular Quay, where ferries meander past our two most iconic attractions, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, along with the internationally renowned Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).
The neighbouring historic Rocks precinct is the original site of convict settlement in Australia and is now home to some top restaurants and popular weekend markets. The modern harbourside boardwalks of Darling Harbour and Cockle Bay incorporate IMAX Cinema, the Powerhouse Museum, The Star ,nightclubs, restaurants and exhibition venues.
The Walsh Bay redevelopment is one of the largest urban renewal undertakings in Australia, with this once-forgotten wharf area revitalised as a lively mix of apartments, cultural attractions such as the new Sydney Theatre Company, commercial and retail.
At the western end of the city, Chinatown is a feast for the senses, brimming with authentic restaurants, eclectic shops and bustling Paddy's Markets.
Over the past decade, the city has seen a marked increase in residential development, and ultramodern commercial high rises such as Chifley Tower now sit side by side with exclusive residential towers such as Renzo Piano's Aurora Place and the controversial Opera House neighbour, Bennelong Apartments, colloquially known as 'The Toaster'.
