Suburb Guide

Naremburn

A secret gem in the middle of the lower north shore, Naremburn is nestled between Willoughby and Crows Nest. Naremburn is a neighbouring suburb to the north of St Leonards. Its name is of origin unknown, possibly using the Scottish word 'burn'. The nucleus of what would become Naremburn was originally known as Central Township, being the first and largest settlement on the Lower North Shore in the 19th Century. Bicentennial Reserve near Small Street, Willoughby is where the upper valley of Flat Rock Creek. Early last century, the creek passed under Willoughby Road at Flat Rock Creek Bridge before cascading over Naremburn Falls, the highest waterfall in the Sydney region, into what was known as The Devil's Hole to the east of Willoughby Road. Leafy Naremburn Park is a great place for a picnic with tables and chairs, barbecue facilities, and a playground. There is an off leash dog area and the park is part of the Wilksch Walk from St Leonards Station to Tunks Park. In Flat Rock Gully is the historic Henry Lawson Cave, the venue for regular poetry readings. Other recreation options are the Dawson and Market Street Reserve playground and the tennis courts at the Talus Street Reserve. It is one of the oldest North Shore suburbs and is an urban conservation area with a lovely mix of character Federation cottages and low-rise apartments. There is a small shopping strip on Willoughby Road that services the young families and professionals who live here. It's leafy and quiet but only six kilometres north of the CBD. Naremburn is within easy reach of North Sydney Boys and North Sydney Girls, Wenona, Marist Brothers College and Shore School. There are also plenty of sports clubs in the area including a cycling club, the Northern Suburbs Tennis Association and Love n Deuce tennis courts.
